Anne Holtrop

(Bahrain)

Studio Anne Holtrop is an architecture practice founded in 2009 in Amsterdam, with a second and primary studio established in Muharraq, Bahrain, in 2014. The studio’s projects are meticulously designed to reflect the unique environmental, cultural, and geological characteristics of each site. Through collaboration with geologists, craftsmen, specialized engineers, and producers, the studio undertakes a comprehensive material research and application process, known as “material gestures.” These gestures create architectural spaces that express the essence of the site and foster innovative material applications. The materiality of the work is closely linked to environmental conditions, particularly the weather, which transforms each space into a dynamic, performative entity.

Anne Holtrop graduated Cum Laude in Architecture from the Academy for Architecture in Amsterdam in 2009 and subsequently established his own practice. Since 2014, his primary studio has been based in Muharraq, Bahrain, where he currently resides. Holtrop is titular professor at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland and previously served as professor at ETH Zurich.

The studio’s work, as well as research outcomes from Holtrop’s professorships, has been exhibited and collected internationally in biennales and institutions, including the First Sharjah Architecture Triennial, the Seoul Architecture Biennial, Frac Le Plateau, the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennial, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Qatar Museums.
