Gustavo Utrabo

(Brazil)

Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo is an architecture studio that emerges from a sensitive and attentive gaze toward the urgencies of the contemporary world. The studio understands architecture as a tool for transformation, built through dialogue with territories, their histories, and material conditions. They seek to expand architecture by imagining spaces that reconcile poetic sensitivity with constructive rigor.

Their creative process promotes physical, conceptual, and sensorial shifts, integrating material research with visual arts practices. The production of paintings and meaningful objects allows deep reflection on each proposal, enriching architectural thinking with symbolic and poetic layers. Commitment to structural logic is essential, not only to minimize material use but also to touch the ground lightly, achieving subtle, precise, and contextually connected architecture.

The studio continuously investigates materials, techniques, and building methods, seeking coherent and sustainable solutions while expanding knowledge of the built environment for sharing and transformation. Each project creates atmospheres that shift human presence in the world, reconnecting people to their humanity.

Among the studio’s main recognitions are the Knight of the Order of Rio Branco, the LafargeHolcim Award – Silver for Latin America, finalist for the Harvard GSD Wheelwright Prize (2020), the RIBA International Prize, and the RIBA International Emerging Architect Award. Notable publications include the monograph El Croquis 207 – With Eyes Closed to See You Better.
