raumlabor is an architectural practice working on urban transformations at multiple levels in experimental ways since 1999. The studio adopts the term urban practice to describe a way of working towards the city as a whole in a trans- to non-disciplinary manner. Their work is guided by the conviction that the city is co-produced by all of us, as a physical expression of ongoing collective activity. They develop frameworks that bring people together, activating agency and common action against tendencies of isolation. raumlabor is particularly interested in exploring the commons as a form of urban governance, aiming to foster self-organization, cooperation, and scalable networks of interconnected commons activities.

raumlabor operates as a group of around 20 people, with a core of nine long-standing partners. Collaboration lies at the center of their working ethic, driving the studio to think, develop, and act together internally and externally, engaging friends, experts, local collaborators, agents, builders, activists, and others in multi-faceted collective spheres.

The studio has worked across Europe and beyond. Their extensive body of work was recently published in polylemma (Jovis Publishers). raumlabor has received outstanding recognition through awards including the Golden Lion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Roland Award for Art in Public Space, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, and the Curry Stone Award.
