Rotor

Tom Schoonjans.
Project manager
(Belgium)

Rotor is a non-profit organization founded in 2006. The association has carried out a wide range of activities, including research on topics related to the built environment; exhibition curation and scenography; interior design; assistance to clients, contracting authorities, and policymakers to foster preservation, salvage, and reuse practices; publications; lectures; and education and training programmes.

A common thread running through all these projects is a deep sense of curiosity to understand the ecology of material flows and the built environment. The reuse of building materials soon became a key vehicle for addressing these questions at both theoretical and practical levels.

From 2013 onwards, Rotor initiated experiments in the salvage and reuse of building components. In 2016, the cooperative company RotorDC (for “Deconstruction”) was officially founded, focusing on dismantling, processing, and selling reusable building elements. Today, both structures operate in parallel and employ approximately thirty-five people.
