Grua is an architecture studio based in Rio de Janeiro, led since 2013 by Caio Calafate and Pedro Varella. Since its founding, the studio has worked on projects of diverse scales and types, with a particular interest in the intersection between architecture and the arts. Grua’s production is structured around the partners’ practices in teaching, research, and design.
Caio and Pedro have lectured and taught at institutions in Brazil, including FAU UFRJ and PUC-Rio; in France, at ENSAM and ENSAPM; in the USA, at GSAAP; in Argentina, at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella; and in the UK, at the AA.
The studio’s work has received national and international recognition, including first place twice in the Tomie Ohtake Akzonobel Institute Award (São Paulo, 2015 and 2019); three nominations for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP); selection among the ten finalists for the DEBUT Award at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2019); the Di Tella Arquitectura Award for Emerging Practices (Buenos Aires, 2023); and a nomination for the Swiss Architectural Award, Ninth Edition (2023–2024).
