Mio Tsuneyama & Fuminori Nousaku
Holes is a Tokyo-based architectural practice founded in 2024 by architects Mio Tsuneyama and Fuminori Nousaku. The studio is rooted in lived experimentation at their home and studio, Holes in the House, where they explore multispecies habitability and reconnect architecture within complex ecological systems through their philosophy of Urban Wild Ecology. Their work investigates how everyday life can reintegrate architecture with surrounding resources such as soil, water, air, and waste. Drawing on ecological knowledge embedded in traditional construction, they engage on-site materials and flows, emphasizing coexistence with healthy soil through breathable, biodegradable materials and independent foundations.
Mio Tsuneyama studied architecture at Tokyo University of Science and received the Swiss Federal Government Excellence Scholarship, graduating from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2008. After working at HHF Architects in Switzerland until 2012, she returned to Japan and founded Studio mnm.
Fuminori Nousaku studied architecture at Tokyo Institute of Technology, earning his doctorate in 2012. He founded Fuminori Nousaku Architects in 2010 and has held academic appointments at several universities in Japan. He is currently Associate Professor at the Institute of Science Tokyo.
Both founders have taught internationally, including at Columbia GSAPP, EPFL, and TU Munich. The studio received a Special Mention at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale as participants in the Japanese Pavilion.
