wohnfonds_wien was founded in 1984 following a decision by the Vienna City Council. It is a non-profit organisation and serves as a coordination centre between property developers, homeowners, their representatives, and municipal departments. Its purpose is to enable and advance affordable, climate-friendly living in diverse, vibrant urban neighbourhoods. Working with multiple stakeholders, wohnfonds_wien provides services through three divisions.

The Renovation Division operates the renovation counselling centre Hauskunft and processes subsidised residential building renovations on behalf of the Province of Vienna (MA 50). It supports applicants in accessing subsidies, accompanies projects to completion, monitors subsidy use, and implements block renovations in selected areas.

The New Housing Construction Division acquires and manages land for subsidised social housing, develops it for construction, and contributes to large urban development projects. It verifies subsidy eligibility and monitors quality standards in major urban areas.

The Corporate Services Division manages investments and partnerships, including joint subsidiaries and companies responsible for the urban development of larger areas.
