Takashi Homma

(Japan)

Takashi Homma is a Tokyo-born photographer (1962) whose work spans documentary photography, experimental film, and photographic theory. In 1991, he moved to London and contributed to nearly every issue of the street fashion magazine i-D during his two-year stay. Returning to Tokyo in 1992, he established his practice in Japan, gaining early recognition with the 24th Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 1999 for his photobook TOKYO SUBURBIA.

Homma has developed a distinctive approach to photography, articulated in his 2009 book Tanoshii shashin [Fun Photography] (Heibonsha). He held his first solo museum exhibition, New Documentary, at three Japanese institutions in 2011–2012. His film First, jay comes. was screened at the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions and at Maison franco-japonaise in 2015. In 2016, MACK published his camera obscura series as THE NARCISSISTIC CITY, and in 2017 four works, including After 10 Years, were screened nationwide in cinemas and museums, including Image Forum in Shibuya, as part of a “New Documentary Film” program.

Recent projects include the solo exhibition Improvisation: Takashi Homma at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2023–2024) and the collaborative exhibition SONGS – The Most Important Things of Refugees at the Setouchi Triennale (2025), highlighting the experiences of displaced communities. Homma’s work continues to explore the intersections of urban life, memory, and social narrative, engaging audiences through both visual and conceptual experimentation.
