Transformations of Barcelona and the Metropolitan Area: Urban Ecologies
Host:Marta Serra Permanyer
Language: English
This session approaches public space as an ecological infrastructure capable of integrating environmental cycles, biodiversity, and urban life. Through experiences such as Can Batlló, Cristóbal de Moura, and the transformation of Plaça de les Glòries, among others, it explores ways of designing with water, soil, vegetation, and shade as active materials: temporary landscapes where water appears and disappears with the weather, permeable soils that restore natural exchanges, biotopes that intensify biodiversity, and canopies that improve climatic comfort. Together, the session reflects on how the design of public space can move beyond conventional urbanization towards the construction of more resilient, habitable urban ecosystems, connected to natural processes.
