Mario Monotti

Mario Monotti is a Swiss civil engineer specializing in structural analysis and plastic design, with a focus on reinforced concrete. Born in 1975 in Locarno, he developed an early interest in the relationship between architecture and engineering. He studied at ETH Zurich, where he also completed a PhD on the behavior of concrete under extreme conditions and structural safety.

Since 2009, he has been Professor and Head of the Chair of Structures at the Academy of Architecture, Università della Svizzera italiana in Mendrisio. His teaching integrates structural thinking into architectural design, promoting structures as both expressive and technical elements.

Monotti is the founder of Monotti Ingegneri Consulenti SA in Gordola, Switzerland, specializing in structural design for cultural, residential, and public projects. His approach balances analytical rigour with creativity and close collaboration with architects.

He has contributed to award-winning projects, including the Leutschenbach School in Zurich, the Two-Pillar House in Sarnen, and the Bahrain Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015. Other works include projects in Muharraq, the House with Rooms and Passages in Bern, the Rosengarten Student Residence in Zurich, and the Misk Art Institute in Riyadh. His recent collaboration with Andrea Faraguna was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2025.

Active internationally, Monotti participates in conferences and publications. His career bridges engineering and architecture, emphasizing structures that are efficient, reliable, and culturally and aesthetically meaningful.
