The first railway line in the country was built to connect Barcelona with its northern coastline. Inaugurated in 1848, with its terminal station in Mataró, it traced a clear escape route from the capital towards the Maresme. The development of summer retreats and the fortunes of the indianos* turned the region into an area featuring major landmark works of Catalan Modernism.
However, the route proposes to explore other aspects of this territory: its condition as a periphery and the urbanization of the intermediate spaces between historic town centres through large-scale housing developments; its relationship with nature through different types of interventions and approaches—agricultural, recreational, and infrastructural; and singular facilities, whether in use or repurposed, that speak to the dynamism of an area which, while not metropolitan, enjoys many of its advantages and few of its drawbacks.
