Often, an important part of the poetics of space is not in the hands of the architect; rather, they merely establish the conditions, like someone laying out a framework, so that social relations may emerge or, quite simply, plants may climb over it. In many cases, the intervention of the architect has not even been necessary.
Examples include former spontaneous rural developments, workers’ colonies that have outlived their original function, surgical interventions within the urban fabric, or highly planned architecture with a vernacular vocation—or fortunately absorbed by everyday life and spontaneity; all of them contemporary sensory oases without the pretension of what is designed.
